Thanks for all of the feedback and questions coming in. It’s a great mix. One theme is present, moving stuff out, on, away. It’s a pretty consistent message across The Dreamy Dragonfly, the need to de-clutter before much else can happen.
It’s really the first step in moving forward with your style, space and self. But where do I begin? Starting small will give you a sense of accomplishment. Living in a clear space is a practice that ebbs and flows with your needs and your family needs, honor that. Starting small will help keep your practice moving forward as smaller spaces are often easier to maintain. Here are 6 steps to decluttering a space. To start, you will need a comfy place to sit, a drink, pen and paper. Clarity Take a seat and a sip, get clear on where you are going to start. What space is calling to you - the mudroom, the kitchen pantry, etc. Write the name of the space at the top of the page. Now take a few minutes to envision what you want this space to look like. If you pop over to Pinterest, set yourself a timer as not to get stuck on your exploration. Make a few notes on how you see the space, how you will use it, what you would like to keep and what you would like to change. Take measurements if needed, make a sketch. This is the most important step so take your time as it sets the intention of your space. Clear Empty the space, give it a good cleaning to remove dust, cobwebs, random bits that have accumulated in the area. As you empty your space, make piles of like things. As you do so, separate items that will be trashed, recycled, donated and kept. Trash the trash, recycle the recyclables, and pack up the donation items to be donated as soon as possible (these items can be creepers and creep back in oh so easily). For those items you are letting go, give them a little mental hug as a thank you for serving their purpose. For those you are keeping, you should have those items in like piles. For those that go elsewhere in the house, put them away now. Yes, immediately. Otherwise, they will sit in place and you will then have another space to clear. Don’t leave them on the stairs, go, put this pile away. Create I think the clearing step is fun but this step is typically the most popular. Create your space that you envisioned. Grab that list and make notes of any items you may need to purchase to create your space. Now head to exploring your current space for items that you can use to create your vision. Your inclination will be to want to run to the store and purchase bins and baskets. Before you do that, see what you have at home. An empty iPhone box, top and bottom, makes great storage for paperclips, lipgloss, etc. Get creative and then head to the store (notes in hand) to fill in the gaps. Contents Now it’s time to load everything back that you have decide will stay. This is your opportunity to do another check to make sure this is where you want the item. If not, make a pile as you load everything back in. Put away everything you decided not to keep in the space. Cheers to you for creating your space! Raise your glass! Commit This space of perfection that you have created will ebb and flow with your life. Share this masterpiece with your family or roommates so that they can also commit to keeping the space clear and pulled together. This is the most difficult step, committing that you will maintain your space, all with no judgement. Life happens, you are up against deadlines, fast paced schedules, people coming and going, using this space that you created. Live in it all with the awareness of having a clear space and what that feels like. It frees up your mind to focus on other things. You and your family will know what you own, where things are and simply be more calm in that space. Even something as simple as your pantry or junk drawer will make quite an impact. Continue As you live in this space, continue to refine it, straighten it when it gets messy, acknowledge it, bask in its' beauty. Continue to honor your work and your space. It will lead to tackling the bigger, tougher areas in your home. It’s a “if you give a mouse a cookie” moment, you will want to keep going.

It's 9-9-9 day. September 9, 2016 = 9th month 9th day 9 year (2+0+1=6). In the numerological world, it's a biggie, one of endings to lead us to new beginnings. It's a day of great healing and an opportunity to walk through a door and release what no longer serves you. And behind the door is the unknown that is rising up inside of you. That desire to be you, to wake up to your true self.
Today, for just a few minutes, get quiet. Find some solitude to listen to your soul. Whether you are at home, in the office or on the run, you can spare a few minutes to take in the energy of today. Use this door as an image to focus on, imagine walking through it with no fear and only lovely opportunity and support behind it. Too hard to get quiet? Turn on some Pandora - Spa Radio or pop on to YouTube and click play on TheHonestGuys relaxing music. Close your eyes, take 3 deep breaths and then breath gently until you are ready to arrive into the rest of this beautiful day. Blessings. It's energy! It is life force. We all carry an energy. Have you ever met someone and thought that they had a good vibe about them? Or walked into a place that just made you feel off, not quite comfortable? The reverse may have happened as well. That is energy - it lingers there for us to feel when we are open to it. When energy is present, you feel a vibrancy about you. When it is zapped, you just want to curl up and hide.
All that I share with clients is about their energy. As much as we hate to be judged by our appearance, the reality is that we are judged by our appearance. I am not talking big and small, I am talking clean and pulled together. When we step into our day dressed and groomed with confidence, we radiate an energy about us. Come on, you know you have felt this before. You look in the mirror and feel fabulous and that feeling carries you through your day. Believe me, I love my cozy pants but I also know when they are appropriate. Ha, yes, I call them cozy pants. Likewise, when we step into a space that is full of clutter and does not quite feel right, we want to flee. That is the energy in the space speaking to you. We all have friends whose homes are ones you could linger as the energy is calming, interesting, invigorating. They still have the school papers to manage and the big deadline looming but their space, oh their space is one you just love. We all have piles and to-dos but those don't have to overwhelm you or your home. You really can live in a space that fits your personality, supports you and brings out a positive energy in your family and friends. This house has piles and the occasional cobweb but awareness about these things is key. Know how to tame the crazy in a home and when it's just ok to let it be a little crazy. It's the ebb and flow of energy that keeps things interesting all while finding your home a sanctuary, a respite from the world. And lastly, your soul energy. The one that is tired from the day or that you have not quite connected with in a while or maybe, ever. This is where the healing happens deep and impacts your movements throughout your day. You just cannot settle it, anxiety rules your day or your sweet child's day. It is tough to tame. Finding soul space via energy healing will guide you to calm. Not overnight, but it will certainly lead you down a path of healing. Learning that 5 minutes a day in quiet energizes you for the next meeting or the approach of the school bus will do wonders for your soul. I have leaned on meditation and energy healing for sometime now. Although I feel I live through my soul, I still get tangled now and again. That's when I connect with my energy to help me heal, sometimes that is in meditation, a gathering of friend's or giving myself the gift of working with an energy healer. Let's move positive energy into our lives by (re)discovering through style, space and self. |
